Conger eel
Conger conger
A relative of the freshwater eel, the conger is a wholly marine species that can grow as large as 200lb. They are a very common catch off Welsh shores, usually as small ‘straps’ from 5lb to 10lb in weight, however conger over 25lb are caught each year off Welsh beaches and on charter boats to far larger sizes.
Conger eels are generally a highly-rated catch amongst sea anglers – but are not always universally popular due to their habit of spinning on the line. They are very strong fish and will put up a good fight. They are quite a good eating fish. Big conger are often caught from rock marks and very rough ground on the shore, or from piers or breakwaters.
Conger are predators and large fish baits such as mackerel work best.
