Rainbow trout
Oncorhynchus mykiss
A non-native species, rainbow trout are widely stocked into small stillwater fisheries and reservoirs throughout Wales. Rainbow trout do not breed in Wales and stocked fish are sterile triploids.
Rainbow trout grow quickly in Welsh lakes, where they thrive in the cold water.
Rainbows provide great fishing on our larger reservoirs, with fish often of a high average size – 45cm plus. There are several stocked variations of rainbow trout – including blue trout and golden trout.
